About the Institution

Harvard University was founded in 1636 by John Harvard (1607–1638), an English minister who emigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony from England shortly before its founding as a Puritan colony. He died just two years later at the age of 31 but left behind his library collection which would form the basis for one of America’s most prestigious universities.

Today more than 40 percent of Harvard alumni are based outside of the United States, representing more than 120 nations around the world.
